FAA Lightning Applications

Operations Planning, Research and Development / SAIC

The FAA sponsors aviation weather research in order to reduce weather-related aviation accidents and incidents, and also to relieve weather impacts on the National Airspace System capacity and efficiency. This research is conducted under the FAA Aviation Weather Research Program (AWRP). To achieve its purpose, AWRP has organized 11 product development teams (PDTs) at various national laboratories. The PDTs which are most interested in lightning data are the Convective Weather PDT, the In-Flight Icing PDT, the Turbulence PDT, and the Oceanic Weather PDT. This briefing presents an overview of how those four PDTs apply lightning data, and it speculates on how total lightning data might improve their capabilities. It also outlines other FAA uses of lightning data.
